Journalism Ever since the invention of the internet and the world wide web which came coming in the 1990’s it brought a lot of excitement to people it was something exciting and different it not only benefited the technical and engineering industry but to the society who were now able to search for anything they wanted online the best part about it was that information was available. The Internet has become a fundament tool; the Internet has also brought in new tools that are constantly increasing.

The impact of digital age has grown tremendously it has actually changed not just the way we consume business, entertainment, and marketing but it has changed the journalism industry. Journalism has transformed in a lot of ways the demand of news has grown rapidly high, people now are expected to receive news constantly they are expected to be updated on a daily basis there is no excuse for journalists to update the citizens on current affairs. Gone are the days when citizens got their news information on radio, TV, newspapers and magazines.

These days people have alternative ways in getting their news its not really a matter of getting their information from Google, but people get their information from different sources these could be friends, family who then send their friends news through mobile phones on Whatsapp, Viber most people post news information on Facebook most of the news that has gone on Facebook has gone viral for example: A video went viral which concerned a lot of parents a child had been abused beaten by his housekeeper this video emotionally affected parents especially the video was meant to tell parents to be careful of whom they hire. Digital media has impacted journalism in a lot of ways first newsgathering; journalists now have to compete with social sites such as Twitter, Facebook, Instragram and TMZ a popular entertainment website these social sites are used for sources news.

They are risks and opportunities that has brought digital age faster news, delivery, access to information has advanced and most importantly international journalists are more in tune with their readers with the advance of Facebook and Twitter, readers are now more expressive, outspoken journalists get a sense of the audience’s thoughts, interests and feelings. The digital age has brought in risks and challenges to journalists with the advance of technology pay less attention in verifying their facts and sources for their stories. Now more than ever journalists more under pressure than ever before such stories as human interests stories, entertainment news and tabloid journalism have abruptly increased over the years through this changes they have deeply influences the public news demands, the media’s new offer, and the role of journalism.

The access to sources, information and data has increased, one thing that has changed journalism is investigative journalism who now have to adapt to the digital revolution using data is another way to let people localize national stories is also another important way that investigative journalism has changed. Websites have created new platforms for news organizations to display their investigative pieces. The digital media has also given people a chance to publish their own investigate work.

For instance, databases and the computers are good sources even with these changes Journalists still face challenges with the government, journalist who publish sensitive stories still face punishment from the government this can get them to loose their status, salary cut, being fired or get suspension from the media community. Most sites are still be restricted by the government, government usually restrict such sites due to the topic that journalists cover this are corruption, human rights, energy and the environment, health and safety. Such media tools that evolved in journalism are emails, voice phone calls, desktop app, IPhone app is catered for and Skype is now used to interview people not only Skype but live blogging is becoming very popular.

The New York Times, the Wall Street journal and USA have adapted to digital media and are increasingly using satellite technology to transmit national editions of their newspapers to regional centers for printing and distribution. Computers help editors and artists prepare informational graphics that tell their stories. Secondly, with the associated press photo stream it has enhanced the quality of AP photos available to newspapers. Thirdly, reporters use computers to access databases and use information to prepare better stories. As newspapers go to fully digitization, editors have more control over page design, replacing many decisions that were made in the “ back shop”, composing room.

One question that has risen is can journalism education be save? Or is when having a journalism degree valuable? Now more than ever people are becoming journalists without having to obtain a journalism degree with the accessibility of mobile phones citizens are able to inform their relatives and friends who live aboard of what’s happening in their countries for instance a video went viral a case of child abuse the when the housekeeper was beating a young child it went viral on Facebook, Twitter and most importantly Whataspp. A book entitled the clue train manifesto published in 2009 the book is about the impact the internet has on marketing stating that conventional marketing techniques are providing obsolete by the online “conversations” that consumers have and that companies need to join.

This situation can be applied to the journalism industry who are a facing an economy decline due to the invention of the digital revolution, newspapers and magazines has been affected because of digital media, sales have fallen down due to the new platforms and easy access people can now access news online from the Guardian, New York Times, Huffing post and many more. In order for the journalism industry to go on journalists need to gain knowledge and learn more on the media business, the importance of knowledge of other cultures, the ability to master various forms of journalists writing must be able to shoot, edit video and photograph. Broadcast journalists need to write for the web and provide additional material to support their video and audio stories.

Training is also important journalists need to acknowledge the changes and do some training so that journalists are able to do their jobs. Finally, the industry can still be saved people are still buying newspapers and magazines, are still watching news on TV. Journalism is not dead but for it to survive journalists need to accept that digital age is not going away, they need to find ways to work in the digital age and most importantly they need to adapt to the changes and digital skills in the 21st century.
